Why Philosopher

Chess with your body.

Collect techniques and you stay a beginner. Understand principles and you build a system. With us you won't learn a hundred moves, you'll learn why they work.

Technique over strength

Jiu-Jitsu was designed so that the smarter person wins, not the stronger one. Leverage, timing and position beat raw athleticism. On the mat and in life.

The gentle art

System over chance

Our curriculum links positions, transitions and submissions into connected chains. You always know where you stand and what the next step is.

Know the why and you will find the how

Community over ego

There are no spectators on the mat. Every training partner makes you better, and you make them better. Respect and honesty are our house rules, not empty words.

Beginner checklist

Comfortable sportswear

A T-shirt or rashguard and sports shorts or trousers (without zips or pockets, to avoid injuries) are all you need.

Sliders / flip-flops

Your most important hygiene item: wear them from the changing room to the edge of the mat. Never step onto the mat in outdoor shoes or with bare feet from outside.

Water bottle & towel

Jiu-Jitsu is a full-body workout. Bring enough to drink. A towel comes in handy after your shower.

Conduct

Mat etiquette

Safety first (tap early)

BJJ is built on mutual trust. As soon as you are caught in a joint lock or choke, tap your partner or the mat two or three times, or say "tap" clearly. We train without ego.

Hygiene & cleanliness

Please trim your fingernails and toenails before training and take off all jewellery (watches, rings, necklaces) so nobody gets scratched or caught.

Iron sharpens iron

We bow to the mat when stepping on and off. We treat every training partner with absolute respect. We can only grow together.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ.

Everything you need to know to get started at Philosopher BJJ & MMA:

Do I need to be fit to start?

No. Martial arts are the way to get fit, not a requirement. Everyone trains at their own pace here. Our fundamentals classes are designed specifically to give beginners a clean technical foundation, whatever their current fitness level.

Is there a high risk of injury?

Safety is our top priority. We place great emphasis on controlled, technical training without ego. In BJJ the rule is "tap early": as soon as you are caught in a lock, you tap to signal the end of the round. That keeps the injury rate extremely low.

What happens in my very first class?

Your first class works like this: arrive about 15 minutes early so we can show you around. After a group warm-up we practise basic movements and techniques with a partner. Experienced coaches or advanced students will look after you. At the end there is optional sparring ("rolling"). As a beginner you can watch first or join in at a controlled pace.

What is the difference between Gi and No-Gi BJJ?

In Gi training we wear the traditional kimono and belt. Gripping the clothing is allowed, which makes the game slower, more tactical and very focused on leverage. In No-Gi BJJ we train in a rashguard and shorts. Because gripping the clothing is not allowed, the game is faster, more dynamic and more slippery.

Can I just watch first?

Of course you can watch, but joining in is way more fun and you feel the vibe. Just drop by during class times, sit at the edge of the mat and watch a class. You'll get a direct feel for the atmosphere and the way we train. And if you feel like it afterwards, just jump in next time.

Can I train with you using Hansefit?

Yes. We are a Hansefit partner gym. If your employer offers Hansefit, you can train with us on your Hansefit membership. You don't need a second membership. On site you check in with the QR code in the Hansefit app. You can see whether your employer takes part in the app or directly with Hansefit.

How do I become a member?

Through the MAAT app. That is where you register, choose your plan and book your classes. We show you the four steps on our membership page.

Our partners

Strong partners.

Four partners are with us from day one, from the region and beyond. They help us equip the gym, on the mat and in competition.
